Writer and amateur photog. I seek to inspire and inform with the words I write and share and the photos I take. I have written a book of short stories: Terra Cotta Beauty, and I am working on a lot more. Reading and writing fuel my energy. In reading, I explore this vast and diverse world, in writing, I employ my over-active imagination and address the 'what-if' questions that life often throws at us.

The Queen of Katwe

By on July 13, 2016

The theatrical trailer for Disney’s The Queen of Katwe begins with the question: “Can you do big things from such a small place?” The true story of Phiona Mutesi encompasses just that as she transcends all the odds to become an internationally recognized chess player. Mira Nair, whose many directorial credits include the cinematic adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake, directs this marvelous tale starring two of my personal favorites: Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo. We are also introduced to Madina Nalwanga whose humble beginnings are similar to those of Phiona whom she plays.

Here is the trailer:

And while you wait for the movie to come out, you might just want to pick up the book, it was on my reading list three years ago when it was released but for some reason I never got to it, now I know I have to read it before I see the movie.
