Writer and amateur photog. I seek to inspire and inform with the words I write and share and the photos I take. I have written a book of short stories: Terra Cotta Beauty, and I am working on a lot more. Reading and writing fuel my energy. In reading, I explore this vast and diverse world, in writing, I employ my over-active imagination and address the 'what-if' questions that life often throws at us.

Hooked on Shuga

By on January 13, 2014

I am completely hooked on Series 3 of the Shuga series.

Ten Things You Need to Know About Shuga

10. It was first aired on MTV Base in November 2009 as part of the MTV Staying Alive Ignite campaign.
9. It is currently airing its third series
8. Series 1 consisted of three episodes and centered on Ayira
7. Ayira was played by the highly talented Lupita Nyong’o who is now receiving international acclaim as a result of her stellar performance in 12 Years a Slave.
6. Series 1 and 2 were filmed in Kenya (Nairobi and Malindi).
5. Series 3  (called Shuga Naija) is filmed in Lagos and is directed by author turned film director Biyi Bandele whose film credit also includes the cinematic adaptation of Chimamanda Adichie’s Half of a Yellow Sun.

4. Series 3 also includes a transplanted character from the previous series – Femi

3. New episodes of Series 3 are uploaded every week on You Tube and the Shuga website
My two favorite characters on Shuga Naija: Sophie and Princess
2. The Shuga radio series features a parallel story line. There is also a Shuga comic book
1. In addition to shining the spotlight on the importance of safe sex, the Shuga series highlights how living with HIV is a reality and not a death sentence
The latest episode leaves us with a dismaying cliffhanger. Watch, enjoy (especially the upbeat soundtrack) and learn.
