Jola Naibi

Writer and amateur photog. I seek to inspire and inform with the words I write and share and the photos I take. I have written a book of short stories: Terra Cotta Beauty, and I am working on a lot more. Reading and writing fuel my energy. In reading, I explore this vast and diverse world, in writing, I employ my over-active imagination and address the 'what-if' questions that life often throws at us.

Wave

By on February 27, 2013

In 2004 Sri Lanka was hit by a 30-foot tsunami which took lives and destroyed property and left in its wake victims among whom was Sonali Deraniyagola. The gigantic wave took her parents, husband and two young sons leaving her with nothing. She narrates her story in the deeply personal, moving and dreamlike Wave. Reminiscing on her life as she met her husband, her childhood in Colombo and raising her sons.

The fact that she could write such a memoir, bring those she loved to live so completely that they breathe on the page, is itself a miracle.
