25 Years of New Edition
I know this going to sound incredibly biaised but I think that New Edition is the greatest boy band ever.
This special combination of voices has graced the airwaves with some of the best songs of the MTV generation delivered with Michael Bivins’ suave personality, Johnny Gill’s smooth and velvety voice, Ralph Tresvant’s sweet distinguished tenor, Bobby Brown’s seamless lyrical style effacing the perceived ‘bad boy’ persona, Ronnie Devoe’s mellow yet dapper aura and Ricky Bell’s collected and assured demeanor. Add to that the marvelous dance moves, the sometimes matching dashing outfits and of course who can forget the haircuts.
We have watched them grow from boys to men…special congratulations to New Edition for keeping it real for the last 25 years
One of the songs that started it all – Candy Girl
A personal favorite – Can you stand the rain?
Bringing the House Down at the BET 25th Anniversary Special with a sensational performance featuring a medley of their songs and a complementary solo performance from Mr Brown

another New Edition fan. This was the first cassette tape I bought for myself back in Form—. I played it till the thing came out of the spool. To hear Candy Girl is to remember the long car drives from Kaduna to Jos, as i was deposited back into the jaws of hell with New Edition reminding me how much my life sucked. Mr Telephone Man would set off the fountains of tears as us home sick boys sniffled and sighed dreaming of the possibility that even wretched boys like us might be loved.
Insert expletive here! I have just realized I am OLD. A band I remember fondly is celebrating 25yrs! damn! I still remember what a mile stone turning 25 was for me.
*shaking my head as I grab my 4point walker on the way to change my Depends*
@naapali – Your comment made me laugh loud and hard. I actually restrained myself from adding a sentence refering to the ages of those of us who were into NE from way back when. Although, I need to add (ahem)…the walker and the Depends…I think you are accelerating the aging process a quite a bit, my dear friend. Always a pleasure to have you on this pages LOL
Oh boy, New Edition. My friends LOVED them some NE. lol!
Can you Stand the rain is probably one of their best songs in my book. Oh, and their last single, something about getting numbers from some lady was nice as well.
Nice post. Anyway, how are you?
@SS – I know quite a few people whose first pre-teen crush was on one of the guys of NE. We are doin’ great…need to get together soon…I have something for you
I remember the hours spent trying to practice their dance steps….HAAA
Damn. I remember how I used Ralph T’s song to ‘toast’ one babe in my Uni. I tried to convince her I was Mr S-E-N-S-I-T-I-V-I-T-Y.
Hehehe funny thing is a couple of days ago I saw some video flashback thing that featured the NE boys in their white Navy uniforms (Those white gloves look so iffy now) going “Oh girl I’m soooorry, you’re not my, kind of girl”. Ahhh… good times, good stuff. In fact I’m to youtube to look for that vid again…
